Update by Mayor Cheryl Nekola

November 2011

We had a very good turnout for our November 1st council meeting.  The overwhelming majority came to speak out against the proposed mandatory garbage ordinance.  Council did listen to the citizens and the ordinance was stopped.  I, as your Mayor and as a private citizen, opposed these ordinances too.  I also heard from those present their concern for the city residents to do more recycling.  Some of you gave us insight on how to accomplish this worthy goal.  I would like to form a citizen´s group to meet and come up with ways we all can help our environment by recycling.  Government should not big brother everything.  We need to take care of our own corner in the world and encourage others to do so too.  None of us as individuals can police the whole USA.  But we can and should help in our corner of the USA.  I would like to call for a gathering here at City Hall from all interested citizens on November 29th at 2:00 we need your ideas.

Next I am proud to announce that the City has gone to bid on our long awaited waste water project.  We have had so much help from DEP, USDA,SRWMD, and of Senators and Representatives and our Engineers.  We thank them all.

It has taken over 20 years to get to this point.  When I became Mayor I had a group of Association people ask me to look into protecting of springs and river by establishing a waste water system. With their help and encouragement and the grant money we are now ready to go to bid. During 2012 we will be building a waste water plant and installings, sewer lines.  Yes it will be an inconvenience for folks while the lines are being installed and the septic tanks abated.  Yes we have to build a plant and no not everyone will be connected during phase one.  If you are not connected you will not have a sewer bill.  In the areas where the roads are disturbed they will be restored to better condition than they are now.  When the waste water plant is up and running our business may be able to grow and expand.  Citizens should benefit from having more business to go to in our town and that should bring in more property and sales taxes so perhaps one day we will be able to afford a small police department.

On another note the city has received a first stage grant to start engineer work on a boat dock and bathroom at Fort Fanning Historical Park.  I would like our city park to be the "Jewel on the Suwannee", because again tourist dollars help our business who help us.

Someone asked, why we want to go after grants in these tough times.  Answer, to help our city businesses survive in these tough times.  I wonder how our city is ever going to improve if we don´t.  I was fortunate to be able to locate the right people and organization that do belive in what we are trying to accomplish.  In the last 4 years we have been successful in securing over 7 million for our community.  It has taken a lot of time, travel and determination to have come this far.  I, staff and city council have been and will continue to represent you in our cities bid for prosperity.  It is an exciting time for us all, we are moving forward.

Sincerely Mayor Cheryl Nekola
